A New Focus on Implementing Clinical Genomics

Posted by Trevor Brown on Oct 20, 2017 12:00:00 AM

For many years, next-generation sequencing (NGS) made headlines with researchers promising unprecedented breakthroughs in medical diagnostics. But the clinical impact was always explained as being a few years and more large-scale studies away from reality. In 2010, forward-thinking academics forecasted whole-genome sequencing in a matter of hours for only $30 (right around that same time, a Stanford researcher sequenced his own genome for less than $50,000 – a record low at that point).

Today, we’re finally beginning to deliver on the promises of precision medicine with NGS-based clinical genomics assays informing treatment decisions in clinics around the globe. But regulatory bodies have moved at a glacial pace in comparison to the almost daily clinical research breakthroughs, so it’s now more important than ever to share best practices, expert insights, and industry news as widely as possible. There’s plenty of great reporting on the latest in genomics research, but there hasn’t been a central home for information on the clinical implementations of those breakthroughs.

So we are genuinely excited to announce that we’ve partnered with GenomeWeb – the premier independent source for molecular diagnostics news – to create the Genomics: Clinical Implementation channel to serve as an information hub for clinical genomics professionals. You’ll find it in the resources tab on the GenomeWeb homepage.

This channel will be constantly updated with the news, insights, and educational resources you need to stay current in this dynamic and expanding field - especially where it concerns the critical areas of robust assay development, cost-effective validation, and leading quality control programs. Both we and the editorial team at GenomeWeb have recognized the widespread demand for actionable and incisive information on these fronts. And GenomeWeb consistently has some of the best coverage of these topics, which makes this partnership such a natural fit.

“SeraCare has been a steadfast advocate for higher quality and standardization of clinical genomics tests,” says Bernadette Toner, GenomeWeb’s CEO. “We’re excited to partner with them to shine a spotlight on these important topics.” And we, like so many others in this industry, look to GenomeWeb for thoughtful analysis when a new guideline is announced; for timely updates on the latest research presented at major conferences; and breaking news on product launches, industry collaborations, and so much more.

I think you’ll find Genomics: Clinical Implementation useful in your daily practice. Relevant news articles will be added as they’re published, and the channel will be updated regularly with helpful white papers, webinars, and other expert resources. And if there is something that you’d like to see on the channel to make it more valuable to you, please let us know in the comments.

So make sure to bookmark it today. It might spark your next clinical implementation breakthrough.
